The Letters We Never Sent

Nashik, 2015. On the morning of a school test, seventeen-year-old Aarav Malhotra hands over his grandmother’s old black pen to a girl named Meera Sharma, who promises to give it back tomorrow.

What follows is a year of shared benches and rooftop afternoons above his family’s printing press, of things said to the sky because they cannot be said to each other’s faces. Then school ends, and life pulls them apart: Aarav to a proofreader’s desk in Pune, Meera to Delhi and, eventually, to Lisbon.

Over five years and four cities, they keep writing. Some letters have no addresses. Some are deleted before they are sent. Some are kept in drawers by people who are sure a better time will come. Meanwhile an old press clanks on in Nashik, a grandmother grows older, and the distance between two people who never stopped thinking of each other keeps growing.

A quiet, bittersweet novel about first love, the people we become when we leave, and the courage it takes to say what we mean while there is still someone to hear it.
