Mastering digital skills and online freelancing
Digital skills are the abilities that let you use technology effectively to work, communicate, create and solve problems. They range from basic digital literacy (using email, cloud storage, video calls, online research and staying safe online) to specialised, in-demand skills such as content writing, graphic design, web development, digital marketing and SEO, video editing, data analysis, virtual assistance and, increasingly, working with AI tools. Alongside the technical side, soft skills like clear communication, time management, problem solving and a willingness to keep learning are just as important, because technology changes quickly.
Online freelancing is the practice of selling those skills to clients over the internet as an independent worker rather than as a regular employee. Freelancers choose their projects, set their schedules and often work with clients in other cities or countries. They find work through platforms like Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com, or directly through LinkedIn, social media, networking and referrals. Payment is usually per project, per hour or through a monthly retainer.
How the two connect: digital skills are the product, and freelancing is the way to sell them. The more in-demand and well-developed your skills are, the easier it is to win clients and charge better rates. Someone who learns graphic design, for example, can build a portfolio, create a profile on a freelancing platform, send proposals and gradually build a reputation through reviews
