The Lantern Wardens of Harrowmere

In a world of cliff-cities and rope bridges, the light you carry inside you is everything. Mira’s burns backward. Fourteen-year-old Mira Voss grew up in the floating markets of Harrowmere, where every person carries an ember that can be shaped into wick-arts: shadow-steps, flame-threads, bending light. When she tries to join the great academy, her ember does the impossible. It pulls light in instead of giving it off, and every lantern in the hall goes dark. Thrown out as a defect, she finds an unlikely teacher in Sorrel, a one-eyed retired courier who has seen this kind of flame before. With a cheerful trap-maker named Pip and her proud, secretly struggling rival Kael, Mira sneaks into the inter-academy Lantern Trials. Then the Dimming strikes. Entire districts go cold, hundreds of embers are stolen, and the thief, the Hollow Cantor, seems to know exactly who Mira is. A story of friendship, rivalry, and learning that the thing that makes you different may be your greatest strength. Book One of the Lantern Wardens series.
